In a few days, many of the leading green thinkers from the United States and beyond will converge in Chicago for GreenBuild 2007, the U.S. Green Building Council’s annual conference that is expected to attract nearly 20,000 green-building enthusiasts.
The conference provides a venue — and a pedestal — for many high-profile projects and concepts, but many niche markets continue to stay out of the spotlight.
For an example, take a look at the justice facilities market. This multi-billion dollar industry that includes correctional facilities, courthouses, law-enforcement buildings and other facilities is a largely untapped market that is slowly evolving to include environmentally friendly design concepts.
Sure, there are massive projects, such as the new federal courthouse in San Francisco, that have gained attention from several national media outlets for innovative and environmentally friendly design concepts, but small justice facilities — a construction market segment that continues to grow — are also taking steps to improve efficiencies and the environment.
Visit the Newsflash section of this issue of Green Building News and read about three justice facilities that took small steps to improve efficiencies and the environment.
As always, your feedback is appreciated. Please send your thoughts, ideas and suggestions to gbn@emlenpub.com, and be sure to visit GreenBuildingNews.com for more green building developments.
See you at GreenBuild!
Sincerely, Matthew Crawford Managing Editor gbn@emlenpub.com www.greenbuildingnews.com
