Indiana School Wins Energy Star Award
BERNE, Ind. — The new South Adams School in Berne, Indiana has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star award after its first year in operation, it was announced.
The school is Indiana’s first new construction project using the design-build delivery method and is now one of the state’s most energy efficient K-12 school buildings.
To earn the Energy Star award, the administration and facilities staff of South Adams School worked with Indianapolis-based construction services firm Performance Services to incorporate green school features into the project, including a highly efficient mechanical-electrical-plumbing design.
Additional features include energy efficient lighting, occupancy sensors, a white reflective roof and natural daylight features. Indoor air quality standards were examined and certified by a professional engineer as part of the qualification process.
With annual BTU usage of 56,000 for the entire building, South Adams is 30 percent more efficient than the average school building in Indiana and in the top 5 percent of Energy Star-certified K-12 buildings in the country.
