SAN FRANCISCO — The Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology (BREEAM), the UK’s leading green-building rating system for 24 years, is coming to the U.S. as part of a partnership with San Francisco-based LEED consultancy BuildingWise.
VANCOUVER, Wash. — The corporate headquarters of Banfield Pet Hospital, relocating from Portland, Ore., to Vancouver, is seeking the highest LEED certification for its dog-friendly workplace. The 206,000-square-foot pet hospital is 44 percent more energy efficient and 40 percent more water efficient than a typical building its size. It is aiming for LEED Platinum certification, the highest LEED rating for new buildings.
BERKELEY, Calif. — AIA East Bay awarded the University of Berkeley’s solar energy lab the Citation Award for its remarkable design in late 2015. Chu Hall, an alternative energy research facility housing more than 100 researchers from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), followed Berkeley Lab’s mission of creating “sustainable, carbon-neutral sources of energy” during its design and construction.
COLUMBIA, S.C. — The first government building in Columbia to purse LEED certification is now underway.
New York-based integrated design and development firm Jorge Mastropietro Architects Atelier (JMA) announced Christopher Moon as its new project director. Moon has nearly 20 years of experience as a project manager, site supervisor and project architect. JWA hopes to enhance its capabilities in architecture, real estate development and project construction, focusing also on sustainable delivery.
Melissa Farling, FAIA, LEED AP, vice president, managing principal of HDR’s Phoenix architecture studio, was recently appointed to the Academy of Architecture for Justice (AAJ) Advisory Group. Part of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Knowledge Community, the AAJ’s primary goal is to promote excellence in the design of justice facilities. Farling has been involved in the AAJ since 1995.
Four products from CCW Concentrates have earned the Green Seal certification for their standards in performance, health and sustainability. The products are part of CCW’s High Performance Health Cleaning program and include the company’s glass cleaner, bowl cleaner, neutral floor cleaner and auto scrub neutral floor cleaner. The products are highly concentrated in order to reduce storage space and environmental footprint and should be mixed with water at time of application.
Milwaukee-based Johnson Controls added a new rooftop heat pump to its Champion brand. The direct replacement design matches other manufactures’ footprints for reduced installation time and cost. Available in 3-ton and 8-ton options, the heat pump has smart controls in order to optimize system setup and monitoring. These smart controls can link to the Mobile Access Portal to be viewed on smartphones, tablets or remote PCs. An optional fault detection program is available to provide users with detailed alerts if problems occur.

LEWISBURG, Pa. — As schools and universities are realizing the benefits of “green” building on campus, the first LEED Gold building on Bucknell University made its debut last year. Although the building opened in time for the fall 2015 semester, it just recently received formal LEED Gold recognition this year. The 14,100-square-foot MacDonald Commons Building was completed by Northumberland, Pa.-based general contractor Zartman Construction and the Boston office of EYP Architecture/Engineering PC as well as Mid-Penn Engineering Corporation, based in Lewisburg.
