SmarterShade Awarded $50,000 Grant
CHICAGO — At the third annual Clean Energy Challenge in Chicago April 4, the Chicago Lakeside Development, a joint venture of McCaffery Interests and U.S. Steel Corporation, presented early-stage startup SmarterShade with the Lakeside Award for clean-tech innovation and commercialization. The award is a $50,000 grant that can be used to enable further research, application and execution of SmarterShade’s go-to-market strategy.
First Algae-Powered Building Debuts in Germany
HAMBURG, Germany — On March 23, the world’s first algae-powered building was unveiled at Hamburg’s International Building Exhibition. The five-story Bio Intelligence Quotient (BIQ) house features a bioreactor façade that will generate enough heat to warm the building’s 15 apartments.

Exhaust Fan
The MH mixed flow high plume laboratory exhaust fan from Greenheck is one of the additions to the company’s line of Vektor lab fans. It features a mixed flow wheel and high plume discharge, with capacities up to 60,000 cubic feet per minute, and 8-inch water gauge, according to the company. The system’s conical discharge nozzle, with multiple nozzle sections per fan size for increased efficiency, uses a fork opening for easy access to belts and motors located away from the contaminated air stream.
