$1 Billion Terminal Expansion in San Diego

SAN DIEGO — As part of its master plan for its International Airport facility, San Diego International Airport is spending $1 billion on its “Green Build” program — the largest expansion in the airport’s 81-year history.

Formerly known as the Terminal Development Program, the expansion features 10 new jet gates at Terminal 2 West, expanded dining and shopping options, and improvements to the terminal, roadway, parking and airfield, according to Flatiron Construction Corp., a Colorado-based transportation construction and civil engineering firm that is building part of the expansion.

Initial construction involved a new USO facility near Gate 19 in Terminal 2 and an on-site project management office.

The project, currently under way, includes construction of a three-story, 10-gate expansion of Terminal 2 with a ticket lobby, airline check-in, and security screening, as well as baggage handling, seating areas, concessions and support space.

About 1.5 million square feet of new taxiway and jet parking will also be added.

The project, which is scheduled to complete in 2012, will incorporate sustainable design principles and target LEED Silver certification, according to a statement from the airport.

The expansion comes due to a projection that airport passengers will increase from 27 to 33 million by 2030, an increase from the current 18 million annual passengers.

The project is a joint venture between Flatiron and Turner Construction Co. and PCL Construction Services, Inc.

Turner is managing construction of the 470,000 square-foot expansion as the majority partner and design-builder, and Flatiron serves as the construction manager for the airside portion of the contract.
