Siemens Signs Contract With Monterey College to Lower Energy Use, Emissions
MONTEREY, Calif. — Siemens Building Technologies Inc. is working to implement several changes at Monterey Peninsula College that are expected to save the school more than $2.4 million in annual energy costs.
Part of a campuswide facility overhaul, the improvements are designed to lower operating costs and reduce energy consumption during the next 10 years, as well as increase student and faculty comfort in classrooms.
Improvements include new building automation systems and controls, HVAC mechanical upgrades, interior/exterior lighting upgrades, IT network management software and vending machine controls.
College officials say the integration of campus systems and high performance technology will offer better control of the facility environment, resulting in a significant reduction in energy use and emissions.
Upon completion, the new systems are expected to reach an annual energy savings of 1.6 kWh, reducing campus carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 2.2 million pounds per year, according to the company.
In addition to energy-efficient upgrades, the campus plans to make several infrastructure improvements to reduce the school’s environmental impact, including sustainable roofs, double-pane insulated windows, waterless urinals and motion sensors.
Recycling programs and storm-water management systems are also being considered for the campus.
