AMHERST, Mass. — The Hitchcock Center for the Environment, located in Amherst, broke ground May 1 on an environmental center designed and constructed to the world’s toughest sustainable development standards.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) will now recognize energy and water requirements from the Living Building Challenge within the LEED green building program, the council announced on April 7.
The Living Building Challenge is touted as a program that sets the highest benchmarks for sustainability in the built environment. The move between the USGBC and the Living Building Challenge means that projects achieving energy and water requirements in the challenge will be considered as technically equivalent to LEED.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Indian Creek Nature Center, slated for completion in 2016, will attempt to achieve the Living Building Challenge, only four other buildings in the world have achieved Living Building status.
Locally based Solum Lang Architects will design the 11,600-square-foot nature center. In order to meet the Living Building Challenge, the new nature center must be a net-zero building and meet the challenges 20 of categories of measurable sustainability features.
