Audi Bringing Solar to German Manufacturing Plants

INGOLSTADT, Germany — German automaker Audi that it is expanding its rooftop solar electricity installation at its main plant in Ingolstadt, Germany and plans to charge its e-tron cars with electricity generated at the plant.

By the end of the month the company says it will also have installed additional photovoltaic solar panels on the roof of its new Audi A3 body construction facility located in the country.

Green Hong Kong Prison Draws Criticism

HONG KONG — Hong Kong opened its first green jail last August, featuring a green roof, solar panels, natural lighting system and enhanced ventilation system but the environmentally friendly attributes drew a barrage of criticism from the public and press earlier this month.
 
After winning a green building award in early November, critics seized on Lo Wu to accuse the government of favoring the prison population over law-abiding citizens.

Japanese Firm Makes Sharp Moves in Solar Market

OSAKA, Japan — Sharp Corp., a manufacturer of microwave ovens, televisions — and a player in the solar market — is acquiring Recurrent Energy, a solar project developer based San Francisco, in a $305 million cash deal, according to reports.
 
The move will bolster Sharp’s solar panel portfolio, which includes the production of photovoltaics for residential, commercial, government, and utility-scale applications, making the multinational more of a “one-stop shop” for solar systems, according to sources.

Italy Adopts LEED System

ROME — Italy is the first European Union nation to adopt the LEED rating system after Green Building Council Italia signed a memorandum of understanding with the USGBC establishing an Italian version of the system.

The GBC Italia version of LEED will reference local standards and codes and outline alternative compliance paths appropriate to the region. The agreement will also see the two building councils sharing tools, research and information about green building.
