Biotech Building Addition to Meet Demand

DAYTON, Ohio —The contract for Biogen Idec’s new 180,000-square-foot amenities building on its North Carolina campus was awarded to Dayton, Ohio-based Danis Building Construction.

Biogen Idec is a biotechnology company that works to discover, develop, manufacture, and market biological products for the treatment of serious diseases, with a focus on neurological disorders.

The company is expanding its facility at Research Triangle Park in response to increased demand for use of its bulk biologics manufacturing capacity, Danis officials said.

RN Rouse, a part of the Danis group of companies that manages work in the Carolinas, will construct the building.

The new building, known as Bio26, will be designed to meet silver LEED building standards and will serve as the company’s “front door” on its 178-acre campus.

The facility will feature an office wing and an amenities wing, allowing for the consolidation of patient services and administrative offices.

The five-story addition will also have space for the company to expand its laboratory and research capabilities, according to Danis officials.

Construction began in late April, with occupancy planned for the third quarter of 2012.

“When we expanded our operations to the Carolinas in late 2009, it was with the intention to pursue projects in the research and healthcare industries,” said Mark Graeser, vice president of Danis Building Construction.
