Solar Project Completed at Port of Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES — Northern California-based Cupertino Electric Inc. announced the completion of a 1 megawatt rooftop photovoltaic solar installation at the Port of Los Angeles’ World Cruise Ship Terminal. CEI engineered and built the installation, which was completed in June 2010.

The World Cruise Center remained fully operational during construction.

The 71,500 square foot roof-mounted system designed contains high-efficiency crystalline modules and uses a self-ballasted racking system that does not penetrate the terminal’s roof. The Port of Los Angeles, North America’s leading seaport, expects to reduce its annual electricity costs by over $200,000. Over its lifetime, the installation will reduce the port’s carbon footprint by approximately 22,838 metric tons of carbon dioxide, the equivalent of removing 4,367 cars from the road, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

The project is part of the City of Los Angeles’ Solar LA Program, one of the world’s largest solar power projects undertaken by a single city.
