Neighborhood Shopping District Receives LEED Silver

WASHINGTON — Neighborhood shopping district operator Edens & Avant announced that Mosaic, its 31-acre mixed-use development in Washington, D.C., has achieved Silver Certification as a LEED for Neighborhood Development Plan. The first phase of the project is scheduled to open in Fall 2012.

One of 239 pilot projects selected by the U.S. Green Building Council in 2007, Mosaic is being constructed on an infill development. The project will feature over 400,000 square feet of retail space, 65,000 square feet of office space, 1,000 residential units, two parks, two boutique hotels and an eight-screen art house movie theater.

Mosaic will also boast a 20,000 square foot green roof, electric car charging stations and storm water management systems. The projects design plan encourages alternative forms of transportation, with its location within walking distance to Metro, accommodations for bicycle commuters, and plans to run a shuttle service between Mosaic and public transportation hubs.

Mosaic’s development team was selected to participate in a smaller focus group of 60 projects to help create the LEED for Neighborhood Development Plan rating system, which was officially released in 2009. Designed by the US Green Building Council, Congress for the New Urbanism, and Natural Resources Defense Council, the rating system evaluates the design and construction elements that bring buildings together in a neighborhood and blend the neighborhood in to the surrounding area through site selection and urban design.
