Orange County Plans Sustainable Jail

ORANGE COUNTY, N.C. — Orange County recently selected Moseley Architects of Charlotte, N.C., to design the new Orange County Detention Facility. The new jail aims to improve both energy efficiency and mental health care for inmates.

While design is still in its earliest phases, the new jail will likely include a number of sustainable features and cost approximately $20 million. It will replace the current Orange County Jail, which was originally constructed in 1925.

Marin County Plans Green Hospital for 2020

GREENBRAE, Calif. — Major work is underway for an expansion at Marin General Hospital (MGH) in Greenbrae. The new $394 million hospital will replace MGH with a four-story, 260,000-square-foot hospital building; a five-story, 100,000-square-foot ambulatory services building; and two parking garages. The facility will also strive to achieve LEED Silver or LEED Gold certification upon completion in 2020. Groundbreaking for the new facility is set to take place in January 2016.

UMass Celebrates Groundbreaking of New Sustainable Building

AMHERST, Ma. — The University of Massachusetts (UMass) recently celebrated a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of its $52 million, energy-efficient Design Building. The ceremony honored the state-of-the-art academic facility and the innovative wood construction technologies it will incorporate.
About 100 people celebrated at the event, which featured remarks from UMass President Marty Meehan. Chancellor Kumble R. Subbaswamy, Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Katherine Newman and State Rep. Ellen Story also spoke.

Green Building Initiative Invites Public Feedback

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Consensus Body of the Green Building Initiative (GBI), headquartered in Portland, recently called for public comments on a revision to its American National Standards Institute, ANSI/GBI 01-2010: Green Building Assessment Protocol for Commercial Buildings. GBI — a non-profit organization founded in 2004 to accelerate the adoption of green building practices — began revising the standard in 2014.

Drew University Adds New LEED Student Center

MADISON, N.J. — The newly redesigned Ehinger Center located on the Drew University campus in Madison received LEED certification earlier this month. The upgraded facility now incorporates many green features and is the second building on campus to become certified, after the LEED Silver McClendon Hall.
