Virginia DOC Preserves 3,000 Acres for Earth Day

RICHMOND, Va. — In honor of Earth Day, the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) announced that it would preserve about 3,000 acres of land at four state prison facilities, restricting any future development of the acreage.

The preserved acreage was divided up as follows:
• Greensville Correctional Center in Jarrett: 428 acres
· Deep Meadow Correctional Center (a portion of the old James River property) in Goochland County: 570 acres
· Powhatan Correctional Center in Powhatan County: 844 acres

Green Globes Costs Less Than LEED, Study Says

PHILADELPHIA — A new study from Drexel University has found that the Green Globes green building certification is more cost efficient and more quickly completed than LEED certification.

Entitled “A Study of Comparative Sustainability Costs/Green Rating Systems Cost Comparison Study: LEED and Green Globes”, the study was headed by Jeffrey Beard, an associate professor of construction management at Drexel’s College of Engineering.

Jeanne Qiu

Jeanne Qiu, AIA, CDT, LEED AP, has joined the St. Louis office of HOK as a lab planner in the firm’s Science + Technology practice. In her new position, Qiu will be responsible for the planning, programming and design of lab spaces for both university and corporate clients. She is currently working on the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) lab design in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia and office and lab space for BioGenerator in the CORTEX district in St. Louis.
