NAS Headquarters Restoration Project Recognized

WASHINGTON — In early May, the restoration of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) headquarters in Washington, D.C., earned the 2013 District of Columbia Awards for Excellence in Historic Preservation.

The estimated $50 million restoration project took place from June 2010 to June 2012.

De Pere, Wis.-based Hamilton Scientific (along with the company’s dealer, Dancker, Sellew & Douglas) was selected for the interior laboratory equipment and casework project because it met the school’s design criteria for product intent, project scope and budgetary requirements.

Franklin Institute Undergoes Addition, Retrofit Project

PHILADELPHIA — New York-headquartered Skanska USA topped out at The Franklin Institute’s Nicholas and Athena Karabots Pavilion, a 53,000-square-foot addition on the south side of the Philadelphia museum, signifying the project’s structural completion. Philadelphia-based SaylorGregg Architects is serving as the architect.

Ralph DiNola is now the executive director for New Buildings Institute (NBI), a nonprofit organization that works to improve energy performance, including promoting design practices and technologies, as well as developing policies and program strategies to reduce energy use. A LEED fellow and a past board chair of the International Living Future Institute, DiNola comes to NBI from Green Building Services, in which he was a founder and partner of the firm.
