University Building’s Passive Design Earns LEED Silver Certification

KENNESAW, Ga. — The passive design concepts at Kennesaw State University’s new social science building help the facility earn LEED Silver certification for its passive design.
The design of the 164,000-square-foot building features window placement that avoids direct light, building materials with recycled content and strategy orientation of the facility.

Most of the green aspects of the building were based on an intuitive, efficient design, says Bill Clark, a principal for Stevenson & Wilkinson Stang & Newdow, Inc., the design firm for the project.

NASA Space-Flight Center Puts Home Planet First

Greenbelt, Md. — NASA broke ground on a $56 million eco-friendly Exploration Sciences Building at the agency’s Goddard Space Flight Center here.

The 265,500-square-foot research-laboratory and office building, which is registered for LEED Silver certification, will house personnel from the astrophysics and solar systems exploration divisions and the office of the directorate.

DeKalb County Expected to LEED The Way for Georgia Schools

ATLANTA — The DeKalb County School System started construction of a new high school that is expected to achieve LEED silver certification and set new building standards for the district and the state.

Arabia Mountain High School, scheduled to open in January 2009, will be the first LEED-certified public school in the state of Georgia, according to reports.

Duke Lab Facility Designed to Meet LEED Silver Standards

DURHAM, N.C. — A new medical research facility at Duke University is the latest building on campus designed to meet LEED certification, a requirement for all new construction projects at the university.

The $64 million Medical Science Research Building II, designed by Hillier Architecture of Princeton, N.J., was designed to meet LEED silver certification. It posed a challenge for designers because lab spaces don’t typically allow for efficient use of daylighting, or water or air circulation, according to the firm.
