Port of LA PD Earns LEED Gold

SAN PEDRO, Calif. — The Port of Los Angeles earned LEED Gold certification for its new Los Angeles Port Police Headquarters building, the first LEED Gold building in San Pedro.

The new building, which Port Police recently moved into, was designed with sustainable features that include pervious paving, landscaped bio-filtration/stormwater retention areas, high-reflectance paving and cool roof materials to reduce heat island impacts.

The 50,000-square-foot, three-story building was built in three years for $60 million.

Prior to its demolition in 2008, the former building on the site housed administrative offices for Evergreen Shipping Line, according to the Port of Los Angeles.

The building received a total score of 42 LEED points, which qualified it for a gold rating for new construction in the categories of sustainable sites, water efficiency and energy and atmosphere, as well for innovation in design.

In addition to native landscape materials and high-efficiency irrigation systems, the facility includes a 4.08 kW photovoltaic array that generates an estimated 5,990 kWh of electricity annually.

Additional energy efficient measures include reduced lighting power density and high efficiency HVAC units with variable speed fans.

The building’s overall energy performance exceeds Title-24 2001 energy standards. Nearly all construction waste diverted from the landfill.

More than half the construction materials were manufactured with recycled content and more than 80 percent of the total construction materials were manufactured within 500 miles of the site.
