Pennsylvania Company Earns LEED Platinum Award

LANCASTER, Pa. — The U.S. Green Building Council has awarded LEED Platinum certification to the corporate headquarters of Armstrong World Industries.

Built in 1998, the three-story glass-and-steel relies on wind energy for about 75 percent of its power, officials say. The facility has an energy consumption rate of 1.5 watts per square foot, which is half the average rate for comparable buildings in the United States.

Water-conservation techniques have reduced annual water use by more than 45 percent. Landscaping was designed to eliminate irrigation needs and to provide erosion control for surrounding wetlands, officials say.

Up to 60 percent of the facility’s waste is recycled, and only Green Seal-certified cleaning products are used for building maintenance and sanitation. Interiors feature sound-absorbing surfaces that provide enhanced acoustic performance, officials say.
